Workshop discusses response to public health emergencies in border areas

Da Nang (VNA) – A workshop took place in thecentral coastal city of Da Nang on February 9 discussing methods and lessonslearned in the preparation for and response to public health emergencies inVietnam's border provinces.

Co-organised by the Ministry of Health and the InternationalOrganization for Migration (IOM), the event saw the participation of a large numberof experts and doctors in Vietnam and overseas. They mulled over a series ofmatters, including the developments of the COVID-19 pandemic and monkeypox; diseaseprevention and control in Vietnam; and ensuring migrants’ health during publichealth emergencies.    

Bui Manh Hung from the IOM Vietnam provided an overview of aproject on the country’s public health capacity building serving a safereopening for international visitors.

He said it has been implemented in six border provinces andfive international airports, equipping customs and health staff with knowledgeon disease prevention and control as well as response to public healthemergencies, and raising awareness of more than 20,000 migrants and residents in border areasabout the harmful effects of infectious disease.

As heard at the function, to manage issues related to thehealth of migrants, Vietnam established a technical working group in May lastyear. The group plays the role of a national coordination mechanism enablingthe engagement of different ministries and their cooperation with relevantparties in building and implementing interventions and health policies formigrants./.

A 2023 report by the Vietnam Health Economics Association estimated that the total cost of tobacco-related healthcare and economic losses reached 108 trillion VND (4.14 billion USD) annually – equivalent to 1.14% of GDP and five times higher than the budget revenue generated by the tobacco industry.

✤ Enhanced anti-COVID-19 measures in place amid rising cases

According to the World Health Organisation, more than 25,000 COVID-19 cases have been recorded globally over the past month. Notably, from January 1 to May 10, Thailand reported nearly 54,000 infections and 16 deaths. The rise in cases in Thailand has been linked to the spread of XBB.1.16 subvariant.
