Vinalines verdict set for May 7

The Supreme People’s Court will declare the final sentence of former Chairman of the Vietnam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines) Duong Chi Dung and his alleged accomplices on May 7.

At the first trialon December 16, 2013, Dung and former Vinalines General Director Mai VanPhuc were sentenced to death for embezzlement, while others wereimprisoned for deliberately violating State regulations on economicmanagement, causing severe consequences.

During the sixth dayof the appeal hearing in Hanoi, the jury considered new documentsprovided by Russian authorities casting doubt over the supposed transferof 1.666 million USD between the Singapore-based AP company, Russia’sGlobal Success and Vinalines on July 7, 2007, as part of a deal forVietnam to buy a floating dock.

Meanwhile, a representative ofthe Vietnam Maritime Commercial Joint Stock Bank (Maritime Bank) wasquestioned about former Vinalines Ship Repair Company Director Tran HaiSon’s withdrawal of 2 billion VND (90,000 USD) at its Hai Phong andHanoi branches between June 2008 and February 2009.

Dung and Phuc deny the charges of embezzlement and are pleading for less severe punishment.

Others also appealed for more lenient sentences and lower fines.-VNA
