Vietnam's proposal at 43rd FAO conference’s plenary meeting

Rome (VNA) - Vietnamese Ambassador to Italy DuongHai Hung on July 5 delivered an important speech, presenting Vietnam'sproposals to implement the food systems transformation programme and contributeto ensuring food security at the plenary meeting of the 43rd session of theFood and Agriculture Organization (FAO)’s ministerial conference in Rome.

Ambassador Hung, who is also Representative of Vietnam to FAO, emphasised in hisremarks that ensuring sufficient food has become a challenge, especially forhundreds of millions of people in low- and middle-income countries. To seek long-term solutions to cope with the global crisis, Vietnam proposes somepriorities for FAO and international partners to consider and support membercountries, he said.

Firstly, it is necessary to support countries inimplementing the national programme framework and transforming theagricultural-food system towards adaptability, comprehensiveness, andsustainability. The focus should be on innovative ways to enhance theparticipation and benefits of small-scale farmers in the agricultural valuechain, reduce food losses and waste, promote e-commerce, and improve traceabilitysystems, logistics, and quality control. It also involves developing diversepublic-private partnership (PPP) models to attract private investment insustainable agricultural value chains.

Vietnam wishes to collaborate with all relevant parties to promoteagricultural commodity trade as the foundation for regional and global foodsecurity, affirmed the diplomat.

Secondly, he highlighted the need to expedite the green and digital agriculturaltransformation, as well as provide financial support, technology, andcapacity-building for developing countries in the transition process to morediverse, sustainable, and climate-resilient food systems. Vietnam is ready tobecome a food innovation hub in Southeast Asia and will actively participate incomprehensive, digital, and green transformation initiatives in theagricultural sector.

Thirdly, promoting coordination and information-sharing insustainable natural resource and water resource management, including trans-boundarywater resources, marine resources, and South-South cooperation, is also important,Hung said.

The ambassador took the occasion to highlight Vietnam'sefforts, stating that sustainable agriculture and food security are among thepillars of Vietnam's economic-social development strategy for 2021-2030, withpriorities on developing eco-friendly and high-tech agriculture with lowemissions, climate resilience, and supporting the improvement of ruralresidents’ livelihoods./.
