Vietnam wins big at international math competition

Hanoi (VNA) – All 36Vietnamese students won prizes when competing in the World Mathematics TeamCompetition (WMTC) held in Varna, Bulgaria from November 19 -26.

Theybrought home a total of nine gold, 13 silver, and 13 bronze medals, and aconsolation prize.

One notablecontestant was Vu Hong Phuc, 8th grader from Cau Giay Junior High School, whoranked 3rd place in the competition’s individual event.

Besides, in the team category, teams from Giang Vo and Cau Giay Junior HighSchool were listed amongst the teams with highest scores in the competition. Ofthe teams, the group from Cau Giay Junior High School achieved a third place.

The WMTC 2018 attracted a total of 387 candidates made up of 67 teamsrepresenting 16 countries and territories from across the world.

This year, Vietnam has sent 36 students from both primary and secondary schoolsin Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, and Cau Giay districts to the competition.

First launched in 2010, the WMTCoffers an opportunity for students to compete, develop teamwork skills andshare experience and culturethrough tours and other academic and cultural activities together. -VNA

Running from August 4 to September 2, under the hashtag #TuHaoVietNam, the campaign invites participants in two categories: “I Love My Country” video clips and “I Love My Country” check-in photos.

With a tight 13-month deadline, the move is under a strategic and urgent policy to bridge educational gaps, train the local workforce, and shore up territorial sovereignty in some of the country’s most remote areas.
