Vietnam wants to strengthen cooperation with US in regional mechanisms

Hanoi (VNA) – Deputy Prime Minister and ForeignMinister Pham Binh Minh said Vietnam and the US should enhance cooperation atregional mechanisms while receiving a delegation of the Subcommittee on EastAsia, the Pacific and International Cybersecurity Policy of the US SenateForeign Relations Committee in Hanoi.
At the meeting on May 28, the two sides spokehighly of the progress in their countries’ relations, which can be seen in PrimeMinister Nguyen Xuan Phuc’s official visit to the US and President Donald Trump’sState visit to and participation in the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in Vietnam.
They also applauded the increase of mutualvisits between the two parliaments, which they said has helped boost mutualunderstanding and cooperation in different fields.
Deputy PM Minh asked the US Congress to step updelegation exchanges at all levels and continue working effectively withVietnam to promote the focal role of economic and trade partnerships inbilateral links as well as to address post-war consequences.
The US plays an important role in maintainingpeace, stability, cooperation and development in the region, he stressed, urgingstronger collaboration between Vietnam and the US in regional mechanisms to consolidatethe central role and unity of ASEAN and strengthen the ASEAN-US strategicpartnership.
Hailing Vietnam’s recent development, SenatorCory Gardner said as Chairman of the Subcommittee on East Asia, the Pacific andInternational Cybersecurity Policy, he will work to foster bilateral ties inpolitics, diplomacy, economy-trade, and security-defence, and share lawmakingexperience, thus contributing to the countries’ comprehensive partnership inthe time ahead.
Gardner added he will support initiatives toreinforce the US’s connections with the ASEAN region.
He also proposed that the two sides coordinateto address regional and international issues of shared concern, including themaintenance of peace, security, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation,and respect for international law in the East Sea.-VNA
The relationship between Vietnam and the US continues to develop effectively in many areas, of which economic and trade cooperation is one of the focuses, said Deputy Prime Minister Vuong Dinh Hue.
