Vietnam, US enhance relationship

While in Washington , Deputy PM Ninh met separatelywith President pro-tempore of the US Senate Daniel Inouye, Senator JimWebb, US Secretary of Commerce John Bryson, US Trade Representative RonKirk, World Bank (WB) President Robert Zoellick and Deputy ManagingDirector of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Naoyuki Shinohara.

Atthe meetings, both parties said they are pleased at the development ofVietnam-US ties in recent times and discussed ways of boosting bilateralties in several areas, especially in trade, investment, science andtechnology, education and training.

Deputy PM Ninh recommendedthat the US Government recognises Vietnam's market economy in the nearfuture; grant Vietnam access to the country’s Generalized System ofPreference (GSP), and most importantly remove trade barriers imposedon key Vietnamese exports such as “tra” and “basa” fish, shrimp, honeyand wind turbine towers.

He asked the US to continue withprogress in helping Vietnam to deal with remaining war issues,especially projects to clean-up the environment and support Agent Orangevictims.

The Vietnamese Deputy PM underlined Vietnam ’s activeinternational integration policies and said that the country willcontinue to negotiate positively with the US and other partners onthe Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement. He also asked the USto ensure Vietnamese interests during TPP negotiations.

The USreplied that it is keen to enhance ties with Vietnam towards strategicpartnership, and will to continue step up cooperation in trade,investment, science-technology, education and training, as well asworking closely with Vietnam at multilateral, regional forums,including ASEAN, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and theEast Asia Summit (EAS).

They also expressed hope that bothparties will soon solve the outstanding difficulties with certain tradelinks and join in efforts to complete negotiations for the TPP.
The WB and IMF officials stated that Vietnam is one of theirleading partners and said that they are pleased with the relationshipthey have with the country.

They acknowledged that the WB and IMFhave supported the Vietnamese Government’s measures to controlinflation and stabilise the macro-economy while restructuring theoverall economy, agreeing that Vietnam needs to continue with thosemeasures in 2012.

They stated that they believe Vietnam ’seconomy will develop positively and pledged to step up cooperation withVietnam bilaterally and multilaterally.

The WB leader askedthe Vietnamese government to speed up the disbursement of capital toprojects with support from the WB under the WB-funded Financial SectorAssessment Programme.

While in Washington , Deputy Ninh alsoattended talks on Vietnam-US economic relations with the heads ofseveral major US groups, who acknowledged Vietnam ’s efforts tostablise its macro-economy and said they were optimistic about theprospect of increased investment and trade with Vietnam .

TheDeputy PM discussed Vietnam’s key development policies for the nearfuture and pledged to continue to create the best possible environmentfor foreign investors, including those from the US./.
