Vietnam urges parties to accept UN-led peace proposal for Yemen

Hanoi (VNA) – Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, Vietnam’s PermanentRepresentative to the United Nations (UN), has called on all parties to ceasemilitary hostilities and spare no effort to work with the Special Envoy,regional partners and the international community in securing an acceptance ofthe United Nations-led peace proposal for Yemen.
Addressing the UN Security Council’s meeting on the Yemensituation on June 15, Quy noted there have been no significant changes inYemen’s peace process despite tireless and resilient efforts of the UNSecretary-General’s Special Envoy Martin Griffiths, his predecessors and theirteams.
Joining other UNSC Member States in calling for a politicalsettlement, he rejected a military solution to the nearly seven-year conflictin Yemen.
The inclusion of women in the political process in Yemenshould also be ensured and promoted, he stressed.
Expressing his concern over increased hostilities andsubsequent displacement, economic crisis, fuel shortage, food insecurity,starvation risk and the spread of COVID-19, the Vietnamese representative alsocalled for a prompt, safe and unimpeded humanitarian access to Yemenis in need,especially in the country’s north.
Rapporteurs informed about the shuttle diplomacy efforts ofthe UN and the international community over the past time to encourage theparties involved to agree with the UN-led peace proposal so as to end the warin Yemen. They also expressed their concern about recent conflicts, particularly inMarib and Houdaydah, which have resulted in many civilian casualties, includingwomen and children.
Council members joined forces in their support for theSpecial Envoy’s mediation efforts, repeating calls for a ceasefire, condemningthe recent missile and drone attacks in Marib, as well as continued Houthicross-border missile and drone strikes against Saudi Arabia. Several members also reiterated concernsabout the environmental and humanitarian threat posed by the Safer oil tankermoored off the Houthi-controlled oil terminal in the Red Sea./.
