Vietnam, United Nations sign one strategic plan for 2017-2021

Hanoi (VNA) – The Vietnamese Government and theUnited Nations (UN) signed a One Strategic Plan (OSP) for the 2017-2021 periodin Hanoi on July 5.

Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen ChiDung, assigned by the Vietnamese Prime Minister, and UN Resident Coordinator inVietnam Kamal Malhotra, on behalf of the UN, inked the OSP between theVietnamese Government and the 18 UN agencies of FAO, ILO, IOM, ITC, IAEA,UNAIDS, UNCTAD, UNDP, UNEP, UNESCO, UNFPA, UN-Habitat, UNICEF, UNIDO, UNODC,UNV, UN Women, and WHO.

Minister Dung said the OSP was signed andimplemented when Vietnam began to carry out its National Action Plan toimplement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Along with other development partners, the UNplays an important role in supporting Vietnam’s development, integration andengagement in the common development of the world through providing advice andpolicy support for the Vietnamese Government, sharing the country’s experiencewith other developing nations, and introducing specialised experience inensuring an economy with green and sustainable growth, he noted.

UN Resident Coordinator Kamal Malhotra said throughthe new OSP 2017-2021, the UN will continue to build on its comparativeadvantages in providing Vietnam with integrated solutions to tackle complexmultidimensional development challenges by drawing on collective regional andglobal knowledge, supporting a normative voice on human rights, prioritisingequity and citizen-centered reforms, and strengthening South-South cooperation.

The OSP 2017-2021 is based on the threeprinciples of inclusion, equity and sustainability. It is aligned with thecountry’s socio-economic development strategy for 2011-2020, socio-economicdevelopment plan for 2016-2020, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),as well as the international human rights commitments of Vietnam.

With an estimated budget of 423 million USD, theOSP 2017-2021 prioritises four focal areas shaped on the basis of the keythemes of the SDGs (people, planet, prosperity and peace).

The OSP 2017-2021 continues to develop thefoundation for expanding partnerships among the UN, the Government, privatepartners, development partners, and legally established non-governmentalorganisations and groups.-VNA
