Vietnam, Thailand foster political-security cooperation

– The ninth meeting of the Vietnam-Thailand Joint Working Group onPolitical-Security Cooperation is underway in Bangkok from July 16-19.

TheVietnamese delegation is led by Deputy Minister of Public Security SeniorLieutenant General Bui Van Nam, while the Thai delegation is headed by GeneralThawip Netniyom, Secretary-General of Thailand’s Security Council.

Themeeting takes place when Vietnam and Thailand successfully held activities tomark the 40th anniversary of their diplomatic relations (1976-2016) andhave sped up the action programme on bilateral strategic partnership for2014-2018.

Itis part of activities to prepare for the upcoming visit to Thailand by PrimeMinister Nguyen Xuan Phuc in August.

Atthe meeting, the two sides shared views on regional and international issuesthat impact security in each country, while evaluating their cooperation inpolitics and security.

Bothsides affirmed their commitments to not allowing any individuals andorganisations to make use of territory of one country to harm the other.

Theyreviewed the implementation of the joint working group’s working programme forthe 2016-2018 period in combating transnational crimes such as illegalimmigration, human trafficking, terrorism, money laundering, cyber crime andinternational economic crime, as well as cooperation in defence, lawenforcement and justice, and other related matters.

Thetwo sides discussed and proposed measures to deal with problems related tofishermen, fishing boats and other violations at sea in the spirit of humanityand the strategic partnership.

Theyalso agreed to organise the 10th meeting of the Vietnam-ThailandJoint Working Group on Political-Security Cooperation in Vietnam in 2018.

Duringtheir stay in Thailand, Sen. Lieut. Gen. Bui Van Nam paid a courtesy call toGeneral Prawit Wongsuwan, Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister ofThailand.

TheVietnamese delegation also visited the Memorial House for President Ho Chi Minhin Bangkok, and had meetings with representatives of the Overseas VietnameseAssociation in Thailand and a number of overseas Vietnamese families in NakhonPhanom.-VNA
