“Vietnam strongly supports UN peacekeeping collective efforts. Since 2014, we have joined the community of troop-contributing countries and send our peacekeepers to UNMISS in South Sudan and MINUSCA in Central Africa,” Ambassador Nga said at the Fourth Committee of the 70th session of the General Assembly on Agenda Item 56 “Comprehensive review of the whole question of peacekeeping operations in all their aspects,” held in New York on November 4.
Vietnam is preparing to dispatch a level-two hospital and an engineering company to UN peacekeeping missions and continue sending liaison officers and staff officers as well, she added.
Sharing views with other countries at the session, the ambassador said it is essential for the UN peace operations to uphold the purposes and the principles of the UN Charter, as well as the guiding principles of these operations, namely impartiality, non-use of force except in self-defence and the consent of the parties concerned.
She also emphasised the need to have a larger consultation with the troop and police-contributing countries and a strict observation of these principles in preparing and implementing its mandates, while noting the safety and security of UN personnel should be one of main concerns.
At the session, participants spoke of the role and contributions of UN peacekeeping operation in nearly 70 years, as well as the reports of the Secretary General and the High-Level Independent Panel on Peace Operations on the issue.-VNA
