Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam refutes groundless and untruthful information about thesituation of the Khmer people in the country, spokeswoman of theVietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang has said.
In response to a reporter's query about Vietnam’s response to Khmer Kampuchea Krom’s distorted allegations regarding the situation of the Khmer people in Vietnam, Hang said the Khmer people are anintegral part of the community of 54 fraternal ethnic groups in Vietnam, who have been coexisting equally and harmoniously, and jointly contributing to the causeof national construction and defence throughoutthe country's history.
All ethnic groups in Vietnam are treatedequally, she said, adding that the Vietnamese State ensures and creates favourable conditions for the comprehensivedevelopment in order to continuously improve the material and spiritual lives of ethnicminority people,preserve their ethnic identity and uphold their fine customs, habits, traditions and cultures, contributing to strengthening the great national unity bloc./.
Khmer ethnic people in Kien Giang province are currently in a festive atmosphere as their traditional New Year festival called Chol Chnam Thmay is nearing.
Leaders of the Mekong Delta province of An Giang on April 11 visited and offered greetings to Buddhist dignitaries, monks and followers at Thom Mit and Prolai Meas pagodas in Tinh Bien township, ahead of Khmer ethnic minority people’s traditional New Year festival Chol Chnam Thmay.
Chol Chnam Thmay is a New Year festival of the Khmer ethnic people according to their traditional calendar. The festival fell on April 14-16 this year. In Soc Trang province, over 400,000 Khmer people celebrated the traditional New Year festival with joy and fun thanks to improved livelihoods.
