Vietnam lacquer paintings on show in RoK

As many as 42 lacquer paintings by 14 Vietnamese artists are being showcased in an exhibition at the Ganaisa Art Centre in the capital city of the Republic of Korea (RoK) from July 15 to 20.
As many as 42 lacquer paintings by 14 Vietnamese artists are beingshowcased in an exhibition at the Ganaisa Art Centre in the capital cityof the Republic of Korea (RoK) from July 15 to 20.

The exhibition, featuring 12 works of traditional style, and 30 ofmodern style, aims to bring the beauty of the landscapes and people ofVietnam closer to Korean and international viewers.

It also introduces the procedure of making a Vietnamese lacquerpainting, from processing materials, lay-outs, colouring, to finishingtouches.

Addressing the opening ceremony onJuly 16, Vietnamese Ambassador to the RoK Pham Huu Chi highlighted therole of Vietnamese artists in promoting cultural exchanges with othernations.

He expressed hope that the show will help better connect Vietnamese culture and people with international friends.

The exhibition attracted thousands of visitors during the first three days.

Jang Je Woo, a local viewer said he was impressed by the complicatedprocess of making a Vietnamese lacquer painting, and expressed his hopethat more similar events will be held in his country in the future.

The Ganaisa art centre is the venue forexhibitions of many famous names of worldwide contemporary art such asAntoni Tapies, Sam Francis, Jasper Johns, and Roy Lichtenstein.

Lacquer is a special type of material extractedfrom lacquer tree. The use of lacquer began in Vietnam in the ancienttime. It is often used in making furniture, worshiping items and crafts.-VNA
