Vietnam, France enhance law enforcement cooperation

The two sides agreed to step up consultation and mutual support at international forums while increasing delegation exchanges at all levels to enhance information sharing in crime prevention.

Hanoi (VNA) – Deputy Minister of Public Security Lieutenant General Pham The Tung hosted a reception for French Minister attached to the Minister for the Interior François-Noël Buffet in Hanoi on May 27.

During the meeting, the two officials reviewed recent cooperation between Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security and French law enforcement agencies. They commended the positive outcomes in collaboration across various areas, including crime prevention and control, and tackling illegal immigration; coordination in capacity building for Vietnamese police officers in United Nations peacekeeping operations; as well as fire prevention and control, and rescue efforts.

Notably, during French President Emmanuel Macron’s official visit to Vietnam from May 25 to 27, the two governments signed an agreement on cooperation in the repatriation of citizens, laying a solid foundation for future collaboration.

𒁃 To strengthen bilateral ties, the two sides agreed to step up consultation, mutual support at international forums where both countries are members, especially those regarding non-traditional security threats, cybersecurity, and counter-terrorism. Additionally, they committed to increasing delegation exchanges at all levels to enhance information sharing in crime prevention.

They agreed to enhance cooperation in addressing transnational crimes, particularly in areas such as illegal migration, cybersecurity, aviation security, and personal data protection. They committed to sharing expertise in counter-terrorism, crisis management, and crowd management. Additionally, they will facilitate the participation of Vietnamese officers in workshops and specialised training programmes in France, focusing on areas where France has expertise.

Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring the security of diplomatic missions, high-level delegations, and citizens residing and working in each other’s countries through close coordination.

On this occasion, the officials signed a technical agreement between Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security and France’s Ministry of the Interior on combating illegal immigration, and another on financial arrangements for the repatriation of citizens. They also witnessed the hand-over of a legal cooperation agreement between France’s Safran Electronics & Defense company and Vietnam’s Thanh Binh company./.
