Vietnam Coast Guard asked to better support fishermen

Hanoi (VNA) – President Tran Dai Quang on August 15 requested theVietnam Coast Guard to continue coordinating with authorities of islandcommunes and districts to provide more effective and practical assistance forfishermen.
During a meeting in Hanoi with outstanding representativesof the force, authorities and fishermen of 11 island communes and districts,and representatives from businesses and socio-political organisations on theoccasion of the 20th founding anniversary of the Vietnam Coast Guard(August 28), the State leader also reaffirmed that sea and islands hold anextremely important position and role in the national construction and defence.
He asked authorities of the coastal localities, includingisland communes and districts, to continue turning the Party and State’spolicies, especially the Vietnam Maritime Strategy till 2020, into specificplans and measures to develop maritime economy sustainably, combine cultivationdevelopment with increasing the efficiency of fishing, and develop tourismservices.
It is also important to develop maritime economy in linewith ensuring defence and security, ensure social welfare, and help islandcommunes and districts grow further, he added.
Over the past two decades, the Vietnam Coast Guard hasfulfilled its tasks of patrolling and controlling law enforcement at sea, andhelped protect the national sovereignty by law.
The force has taken the initiative in search and rescueactivities, disseminating laws to fishermen, and carrying out military anddefence diplomacy.
Since the beginning of 2017, it has implemented a “VietnamCoast Guard go along with fishermen” programme in island communes anddistricts, which has contributed to strengthening the political system in theselocalities, making fishermen feel secured to earn their living and safeguardingthe national sovereignty as well as sea and island security and safety.-VNA
The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) and the Vietnam Coast Guard High Command will join hands to fight illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, per a Memorandum of Understanding inked between the two sides on October 24.
The High Command of the Vietnam Coast Guard Region 2 has been rewarded with the Feat Order (third class) for its achievements in fighting smuggling, trade fraud and counterfeits, helping ensure security and safety in coastal areas.
