Vietnam, China hold border defence friendship discussion

Thefunction, co-chaired by Vietnamese Defence Minister General Phung QuangThanh and his Chinese counterpart Sen. Lt. Gen. Chang Wanquan, was partof the second border defence friendship exchange between the twocountries.

Opening the discussion, Vietnamese DeputyDefence Minister Sen. Lt. Gen. Nguyen Chi Vinh said the exchange tookplace amid an array of activities held to mark the 65 th anniversary ofthe countries’ diplomatic relations, adding that Vietnam alwaystreasures its relations with China and is willing to consolidate theirtraditional friendship and comprehensive strategic cooperativepartnership.

Sen. Lt. Gen. Vinh stressed theimportance of defence cooperation which is a pillar in maintaining andstrengthening bilateral friendship.

The success ofthe first Vietnam-China border defence friendship exchange, held in MongCai city of Vietnam’s Quang Ninh province and China’s Dongxing citylast year, proved the efficiency of this mechanism in building upfriendship and solidarity between the countries’ border authorities,people, and border guards, thus fostering political trust and theoverall relationship, he added.

The officerexpressed his belief that this year’s exchange will boost mutualunderstanding and create a new driving force for the countries tobolster defence cooperation, ultimately deepening the comprehensivestrategic cooperative partnership for the sake of the two peoples andregional peace, stability and development.

DeputyChief of the General Staff of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Sen.Lt. Gen. Qi Jianguo said the two countries’ friendship, set up andnurtured by late Presidents Ho Chi Minh and Mao Zedong and followingleaders, is the precious asset of their peoples.

This year’s exchange also sent a message to the world about the nations’steadfast friendship and unceasing efforts to contribute to regionaland global peace, he noted.

Speeches at thediscussion spotlighted outcomes of cooperation in defence and otherfields between authorities and people in border areas. They alsosuggested measures to enhance bilateral affiliation with the aim toboost trust and create a peaceful and stable environment for thedevelopment of and cooperation between the two armies and peoples.

Command of the Border Guard Force Lt. Gen. Vo Trong Viet said that theVietnamese Border Guard High Command and China’s Guangzhou and ChengduMilitary Regions have made regular mutual visits, conducted 49 jointpatrols, and worked together to handle 348 law violation cases.

He proposed that the two countries also step up exchange activities,encourage twinning relations between their border communities, anddisseminating laws to their officials and people.

Meanwhile, Commander of China’s Yunnan provincial Military Region Maj.Gen. Zhang Xiaonan said the countries should seriously implement thethree legal documents on the land border and related agreements, andorganise visits and cultural and sports exchanges under various forms.-VNA
