Vietnam celebrates 30th year participating in UPU contest

A ceremony took place in northern Quang Ninh province on October 9 to celebrate the 30th year Vietnam has attended the International Letter-Writing Competition for Young People UPU and the World Post Day.

Quang Ninh (VNA) – A ceremony took place innorthern Quang Ninh province on October 9 to celebrate the 30th yearVietnam has attended the International Letter-Writing Competition for Young PeopleUPU and the World Post Day.

The event was also held to call for entry for the 47th edition of the competition, launched by the Universal Post Union (UPU) in 1971.

Vietnam became an UPU official member in 1976 andsubmitted its first entries to the competition in 1987.

Each year, the UPU International Bureau selects a themefor the competition, aiming to encourage literacy in children and young peopleand develop their ability to express their thoughts clearly.

Millions of Vietnamese students have sent their lettersto the UPU competition at the national and international levels over the pastthree decades. Vietnam has won 13 international prizes, including three first, one second and three third prizes.

This year, Nguyen Do Huyen Vi, an eighth grader from Tay Son Secondary Schoolin Hai Chau district, central Da Nang city, won the firstprize at the national level and the consolation prize at the internationallevel for her letter to the UN Secretary-General, advising him on how to solvethe Syrian refugee issues.-VNA

Running from August 4 to September 2, under the hashtag #TuHaoVietNam, the campaign invites participants in two categories: “I Love My Country” video clips and “I Love My Country” check-in photos.

With a tight 13-month deadline, the move is under a strategic and urgent policy to bridge educational gaps, train the local workforce, and shore up territorial sovereignty in some of the country’s most remote areas.
