Vietnam backs sincere dialogue between Myanmar and int’l partners

Geneva (VNA) –
Vietnam always supports sincere dialogu▨e and substantial cooperation between Myanmar and international partner, the country said at the UN Human Rights Council’s dialogue with special rapporteurs on human rights in Myanmar, which took place in Geneva, Switzerland, on Marꦆch 14.

Delivering a speech at the event as a member of the UNHCR, Head of Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the UN and other international organisations in Geneva Nguyen Trung Thanh stated Myanmar’s democratic election held in November 2015 was a significant landmark. The event added to a series of achievements that the country has secured on its way to democratisation, national reform and reconciliation, he noted.
Vietnam will continue to standing by Myanmar’s side during its national development process, Thanh said. Vietnam acknowledged international concerns for Myanmar, he said, stressing that the concerns should be realised in line with international law and the UN charter, particularly the principles on self-determination and non-intervention in internal affairs. The ambassador said the international community should focus on constructive cooperation and technical support to boost the protection and promotion of rights of Myanmar people, thus realising Maynmar people’s legitimate aspiration for peace, stability, democracy and development.
Speaking on behalf of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), the diplomat underscored the solidarity between the bloc and Myanmar. ASEAN expected international communities to follow an objective approach to the human rights issues without discrimination, double standard and politicisation, Thanh said. He continued noting that the bloc urged the UN Human Rights Council to reconsider the inclusion of Myanmar’s issues in its relevant agenda.
The dialogue was part of the 31st regular session of the UN Human Rights Council, which runs in Geneva, Switzerland, from February 29 to March 24.-VNA
