Vietnam attends WTO’s 9th ministerial conference

The three-dayconference, chaired by Indonesian Trade Minister Gita Wirjawan, also sawthe participation of 20 observer states and Palestine.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Indonesian President Susilo BambangYudhoyono emphasised the importance of the event, which is expected toresolve a deadlock in the Doha Round of trade talks launched 12 yearsago, which came to a standstill due to disparities among developed anddeveloping members.

The president called forpolitical will, unanimity and flexibility of member countries in makingbreakthrough progress and win-win solutions on pressing issues includingagriculture, trade facilitation and the least developed countries orLDCs.

He urged participants to focus theirdiscussion on the Bali package, which includes many sensitive technicalissues such as tariffs, export competition, support to agriculturalproducts of developing countries and favourable conditions for trade andtrade negotiations.

Meanwhile, in his speech, WTODirector-General Roberto Azevedo said the conference is a chance tobreak the Doha Round deadlock and strengthen cooperation relations thatcan lead to stronger multilateral cooperation, developing global tradereform principles and fighting against protectionism and helping memberstates to resume growth, create jobs and develop.

Atthe latest conference in Geneva, WTO members could not reach aconsensus on agreements included in the Bali package, which is thefocus of this Bali conference.

In the December 3working session, participants also heard speeches by ministers anddiscussed ways to boost multilateral trade in the current globaleconomic and political situation.

On December 4 and5, the ministers are scheduled to focus on the Bali package inconnection with the WTO multilateral trade system, trade anddevelopment, while seeking ways to speed up the Doha Round.

They will also talk issues related to food security, support forproduction and the export of agricultural products, public purchase andthe removal of trans-border trade barriers.-VNA
