Vietnam attends Interpol General Assembly in China

Beijing (VNA) – A Vietnamese delegation led by Deputy Minister ofPublic Security Le Quy Vuong and delegates from 157 foreign countries andterritories are attending the 86th Interpol General Assembly which openedin Beijing, China, on September 26.

In his welcome remarks, Chinese President Xi Jinping underlined thesignificance of enhancing cooperation among police forces through Interpol inthe fight against cross-border crimes, particularly in the context that theworld situation has been witnessing complicated developments and continuousterrorist attacks, posing high risks of security and safety for all countriesand regions.

Since 2015, Interpol has priorised the struggles against terrorism, high-techcrimes, organised crimes and emerging crimes like human trafficking and drugtrafficking.

This year, the General Assembly spent its first working day reviewing theglobal security and discussing new initiatives to enhance cooperative relationsbetween police forces and partners in the private sector in the field ofsecurity, especially in police data connection.

Delegates from Interpol’s members analysed challenges and mapped out solutionsto handle various kinds of crimes and terrorism. They discussed a financialplan until 2020 which must ensure transparency and efficiency. Interpol’s orientationsfor 2018 were also on the table.

During the three-day meeting, the General Assembly will consider the admissionof Solomon, Palestine and Kosovo. Nineteen resolutions on cooperation toprevent transnational crimes will be adopted at the event.

On the sidelines of the meeting, the Vietnamese delegation will meet with the InterpolGeneral Secretary and President as well as other foreign representatives totighten partnership relations and call for stronger support from Interpol and coordinationfrom other nations in the struggle against crimes.

Interpol is the world’s largest international police organisation with 190members. The idea of Interpol was born in 1914 at the first InternationalCriminal Police Congress, held in Monaco. Officially created in 1923 as theInternational Criminal Police Commission, the organisation became known asInterpol in 1956.

It enables police around the world to work together to make the world a saferplace. Its high-tech infrastructure of technical and operational support helpsmeet the growing challenges of fighting crimes in the 21st century.-VNA
