Vietnam attends IAEA Board of Governors Meeting

Hanoi (VNA) – A Vietnamese delegation ledby Ambassador Nguyen Trung Kien, Governor - Permanent Representative of Vietnamto the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), is attending a regularmeeting of the agency’s Board of Governors in Vienna from March 6-10.

The Vietnamese representatives joined discussions ondraft reports on security, safety and the application of nuclear technology in2023.

They also reiterated Vietnam’s consistent guidelinesand policies of supporting the IAEA’s three pillars - safe, secure and peacefuluses of nuclear science and technology.

Vietnam also lauds the agency’s initiatives inpromoting the application of nuclear technology in service of civil activitiesfor peaceful purposes.

It backs a balanced approach to nuclear safetyand security, shares concern about current complex developments in security,upholds the principle of dialogue and the settlement of disputes by peacefulmeans on the basis of the United Nations Charter and international law.

Participants have reviewedsecurity, safety and application of nuclear technology in 2022 and looked into theIAEA’s priorities in this field in 2023, as well as the implementation of safeguardsagreements between the agency and Iran, Syria and the Democratic People’sRepublic of Korea (DPRK), among other issues.

In his remarks, IAEA Director General Rafael MarianoGrossi affirmed: “It is a central and unique strength of the agency that wefacilitate and produce data that is usable, comparable and accessible to all states.
"Our scientific work, and ourassistance to member states in designing their own studies and collecting,sharing and analysing data, advances global understanding on key issues andfacilitates science-based policy decision with national, regional, and globalimpact.”

The IAEA will continue to support Turkey and Syriain their response efforts and provide significant additional assistance under its technical cooperation programme, he pledged.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Vietnam’s NationalAction Centre for Toxic Chemicals and Environmental Treatment (NACCET) willhold working sessions with representatives from international organisations andpartners to enhance cooperation in nuclear technology application.

The IAEA Board of Governors convenes meetings inMarch, June, September and November each year.

Vietnam was elected as a member of the council inSeptember 2021 for a two-year tenure./.

The networks bring together universities, research institutes and domestic and foreign businesses. Members will work closely in training, research, and technology transfer by sharing curricula, improving faculty capacity, providing access to laboratories and research facilities, and jointly implementing science and technology projects.

The resumption of the programme after years of suspension carries considerable significance for the nation’s development in a new era as it strives to gradually reduce and ultimately phase out coal-fired power to realise the Government’s commitment to Net Zero by 2050.

Vietnam has issued many key policies to support semiconductor development, notably the Politburo’s Resolution 57 on science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation. Other initiatives include the Semiconductor Industry Development Strategy to 2030, with a vision to 2050, and the Human Resources Development Programme for the Semiconductor Industry.
