Van Don int’l airport planning adjustments announced

Quang Ninh (VNA) – The Ministry of Transport has announced itsdecision adjusting the planning scheme of Van Don International Airport by 2020with a vision towards 2030.

Under Decision No. 497/QD-BGTVT dated March 15, 2018, Van Don in the northerncoastal province of Quang Ninh will be an international airport, serving bothcivil and military flights.

From now till 2020, it will house a level-4E airport and a level-II militaryairport, and a 3.6km long runway.

With an annual capacity of 2-2.5 million passengers by 2020, which isexpected to hit 5 million by 2030, VanDon International Airport is designed to receive Boeing777/787/747-400, Airbus A350 and similar aircraft.

Set to cover more than 326ha as planned by 2020, the airport comprisessupport facilities, a two-module terminal and functional areas. A cargoterminal is expected to be built by 2030 with a capacity of at least 51,000tonnes.

Invested by SunGroup, the project began 2015 with combined capital ofabout 7.5 trillion VND (330 million USD). This is also the first airport constructedby capital mobilised by a locality.     

The airport is scheduled to be put into service in the second quarter ofthis year.

In 2017, Quang Ninh accommodated 9.87 milliontourist arrivals, including 4.28 million foreigners, up 18 percent and 23percent year on year, respectively.

The locality, which hosts the National TourismYear 2018, hopes to welcome 12 million visitors this year, including fivemillion foreigners, and earn 22 trillion VND (968 million USD).-VNA
