Two sentenced to death in Vinashinlines embezzlement

Hanoi (VNA) – The Hanoi People’sCourt handed down the death penalty on two former officials at Vinashin OceanShipping Company Ltd (Vinashinlines) for embezzlement.

The duo are Tran Van Liem, former generaldirector of Vinashinlines, and Giang Kim Dat, former acting head of Vinashinlines’ sales department.

For other defendants in the case, Tran VanKhuong, the company’s ex-chief accountant, was sentenced to life imprisonment alsofor embezzlement, while Giang Van Hien, father of Giang Kim Dat, was given a12-year jail term for money laundering.

The court demanded the recovery of over 260billion VND (11.56 million USD) misappropriated by the defendants to return tothe Vietnam’s Ship Building Industry Corporation (Vinashin), the parent companyof Vinashinlines.

The court held that there are sufficient grounds to confirmthat during the process of purchasing and leasing ships, Liem, Dat and Khuonghad abused their position and power to appropriate more than 260 billion VND ofVinashinlines. Liem misappropriated 3.1 billion VND (138,000 USD), while Dat embezzledaround 255 billion VND (11.34 million USD) and Khuong, 110,000 USD.

Liem was pinpointed as the ringleader in thecase, while Dat was a proactive accomplice and Khuong was an accomplice.-VNA
