Training course for UN logistics officers opened in Hanoi

Hanoi (VNA) – A training course for United Nationslogistics officers, co-organised by Vietnam and Canada, opened in Hanoi onApril 16.

Maj. Gen. Hoang Kim Phung, Director of theVietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations (VDPO), said the course will providetraining for 28 officers, consisting of 13 from Vietnam and 15 others from 10partner countries of the Military Training Cooperation Programme. Running untilApril 27, it will feature five lecturers from Canada and Sierra Leone, and twofrom Vietnam.

At the opening ceremony, Deputy Defence MinisterSen. Lt. Gen. Nguyen Chi Vinh, who is also head of the Ministry of Defence’ssteering board for Vietnam’s participation in UN peacekeeping operations, said thatover the last seven decades, UN peacekeeping activities have proved theirimportant role in recovering and maintaining peace, including rebuildingcountries after conflicts. 

In those operations, Canada has continually beenone of the leading contributors, with over 125,000 military and police officerssent to UN missions. It has also been a key driver in proposing importantinitiatives that have won high consensus, said the deputy defence minister,thanking the Canadian government and Department of National Defence forcreating conditions for the two sides to organise the UN logistics officers’course.

Vinh also asked the VDPO to increasecoordination with other countries, especially with Asian-Pacific nations andthose who have cooperated with Vietnam, to hold more activities in the field ofpeacekeeping.

Meanwhile, Canadian Ambassador to VietnamDeborah Paul said ensuring logistics is critical to the success of UNpeacekeeping missions, noting that through this training course, participantswill acquire useful knowledge for their tasks in the future.

She also voiced her hope that the courseco-organisation will serve as a basis for further training cooperation betweenthe two countries in the future. –VNA
