Tra Vinh: 7 million USD for new-style rural building, poverty reduction
The Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh will spend 179 billion VND (7.16 million USD) to bolster efforts in new-style rural area building and sustainable poverty reduction this year.

Tra Vinh (VNA) – The Mekong Delta province ofTra Vinh will spend 179 billion VND (7.16 million USD) to bolster efforts innew-style rural area building and sustainable poverty reduction this year.
According to the provincial People’s Committee, about 64percent of the funds, or 115 billion VND (4.6 million USD), will finance thenational target programme on building new-style rural areas.
The amount will be used to improve infrastructure acrossthe province and help rural people develop value chains and distributionchannels. It will also help provide locals with vocational training, improveenvironmental sanitation and hygiene and develop education in rural areas.
The remaining 64 billion VND (2.56 million USD) will bespent to carry out the national target programmes on sustainable poverty alleviation.
Tra Vinh plans to build and repair infrastructureprojects in seven coastal and island communes, scale up models of successfulpoverty reduction and help locals boost production and diversify livelihoods.It will also send poor people to work overseas in guest worker programmes.
Additionally, part of the funds will be provided toProgramme 135 which aids 24 extremely-poor communes in infrastructure,production development and improve local incomes.
Earlier this year, seven more communes in Tra Vinh wererecognised as new-style rural areas, bringing the total communes earning thetitle to 30 out of 85.-VNA
Dak Nong spent nearly 52 billion VND (2.33 million USD) on poverty reduction in 2017, helping bring the poverty rate among local households down by 2.63 percent from 2016 to 16.57 percent.
The average household poverty rate in Vietnam dropped by 1.51 percent from 2016 to 6.72 percent in 2017, according to the national target programme on sustainable poverty reduction.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has raised the target of new-style rural area ratio among communes nationwide to 39 percent in 2018 from the 37 percent it set earlier this year.
The Mekong Delta city of Can Tho expects to recognise four additional communes as new-style rural areas in 2018 and three more in 2019, fulfilling its plan to turn 36 communes into the new-style rural areas a year earlier than scheduled.
The north central province of Thanh Hoa has taken a number of specific measures to fulfill its new-style rural area building plan, striving to have an additional 42 communes accomplishing all criteria of the programme in 2018.
The programmes have brought about positive changes to rural infrastructure, comprehensively improved the material and spiritual lives of farmers, and contributed to Vietnam's economic restructuring, said PM Pham Minh Chinh.

The programme on sustainable poverty reduction has achieved its annual targets for reducing the poverty rate as assigned by the National Assembly and the Government. It has fulfilled five specific objectives and five five-year goals, and met nine out of 12 indicators related to addressing basic social service shortages.
