The Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang is speeding up the construction of three sluices to prevent seawater intrusion and ensure fresh water for 35,000 ha of cultivated land in Go Cong area.

Tien Giang (VNA) – The Mekong Delta province ofTien Giang is speeding up the construction of three sluices to prevent seawate💦rintrusion and ensure fresh water for 35,000 ha of cultivated land in Go Congarea.

About 40 percent of the work has been done and workers aretrying to finish the construction ahead of schedule, said Truong Hoang Dieu,Deputy Director of the Management Unit of sub-projects in the Regional TechnicalAssistance (RETA) project (under the provincial Department of Agriculture andRural Development). The sluices are expected to become operational by December2017, he added. The construction, costing 89 billion VND (3.9 million USD),is part of the project “Greater Mekong Sub-region Flood and Drought RiskManagement and Mitigation” funded by the Asian Development Bank (ABD) and the Australia Agency forInternational Development (AusAID).-VNA
