Tien Giang province to aid travel businesses hit by COVID-19

Businesses in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang hit hard by COVID-19 are seeking support, including deadline extensions for tax payments, from the provincial authorities.

- Businessesin the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang hit hard by COVID-19 are seekingsupport, including deadline extensions for tax payments, from theprovincial authorities.

Director of the provincialDepartment of Culture, Sport and Tourism Nguyen Duc Dam said that more than 1,200businesses, households and clubs in the fields of culture, tourism and sporthad to stop operating due to COVID-19.

In the first quarter, TienGiang received over 375,000 tourists and earned 160 billion VND (6.9 millionUSD) in tourism revenue, a drop of 43 percent and 50 percent,respectively, year-on-year.  

Phan Hoai Lam, deputy directorof Saigontourist's branch in the province, said that revenue had droppeddrastically and there were no foreign tourists. Domestictourism had just started to pick up, he added. 

Lam said his company waslooking for tax reductions and extended deadlines for socialinsurance and VAT payments.

Nguyen Thi My Trang, deputydirector of Lang Viet Travel Co., Ltd, said she hoped that localauthorities would lower land rent and insurance fees and extendpayment deadlines.

The Tien Giang TourismAssociation has asked authorities to lower bank loan interest ratesand extend payment deadlines.

The association saidthat loans with low interest rates are needed for organisationsin the fields of tourism, sport and culture. To help those businesses recover,reduction in land rent fees and extension of payment deadlinesare needed as well.   

Dam said the departmenthad been working with other agencies to carry out policiesfrom the central and local governments to assist businesses affected byCOVID-19.

In the future, departmentswould develop a media campaign on safe travel to Vietnam and TienGiang to encourage tourism.

The province would also helpbusinesses improve tourism products and build tourism stimulationprogrammes.   

Dam said that tourismbusinesses should provide newer tourism products and services, andthat departments should focus on promoting tourism and work cooperativelywith HCM City, Hanoi and Mekong Delta provinces./.
