Thailand orders security reviews ahead of 35th ASEAN Summit

Bangkok (VNA) – Thai Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon has ordered acomprehensive review of all security procedures in preparation for the upcoming35th ASEAN summit, according to Defence Ministry spokesman KongcheepTantravanich.
Lt. Gen. Kongcheepsaid Deputy PM Prawit, who oversees national security, has instructed relevantagencies to review security plans for the three-day summit, which will start onNovember 2.
The agencies have beentold to be on the lookout for any developing situations and work to ensure thatsecurity measures are enforced in compliance with international standards, he said.
He added that intelligence operations will be stepped up in order to head offany situation which could disrupt the high-level meeting.
Related agencies, includingthe Interior Ministry, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, and the RoyalThai Police, will check closed-circuit cameras in public areas across Bangkokand surrounding provinces to ensure they are in working order.
Security operationswill also be integrated for the effective screening of people passing throughborder checkpoints, the spokesman said.
Deputy national policechief Suwat Chaengyotsuk earlier said that over 10,000 police officers will bedeployed to secure the summit as it is the year's final meeting of regional leaders./.
