Storm Khanun hits East Sea, urgent actions requested

Tropical storm Khanun has passed the north of the Philippines’ Luzon Island and entered the East Sea, becoming the 11th typhoon hitting the waters this year, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

Hanoi (VNA) – Tropical storm Khanun has passedthe north of the Philippines’ Luzon Island and entered the East Sea, becomingthe 11th typhoon hitting the waters this year, according to the National Centrefor Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

At 10am of October 13, the storm’s centre was ataround 17.7 degrees north latitude and 119.6 degrees east longitude, about820km east-northeast of Hoang Sa (Paracel) archipelago. It sustained winds ofup to 60-75km per hour.

In the next 24 hours, Khanun is forecast to movetowards west-southwest at a speed of 10-15km per hour and intensify.

At 10am of October 14, its eye will be at about17.3 degrees north latitude and 117.1 degrees east longitude, about 510kmeast-northeast of Hoang Sa. The strongest wind speeds may reach 90-100km perhour.

The dangerous area, which has wind speeds of atleast 40km per hour, will be from the 14th to the 21st parallel north and inthe east of the 113th meridian east.

In the following 24-48 hours, the typhoon willmove towards west-northwest at some 15km per hour and is likely to continuegaining strength.

At 10am of October 15, its centre is predictedat about 18.8 degrees north latitude and 113.6 degrees east longitude, about250km north-northeast of Hoang Sa. Wind speeds at that time may reach 115-135kmper hour.

Khanun is forecast to keep moving towardswest-northwest at around 20km per hour in the following 48-72 hours.

In the face of the coming storm, the CentralSteering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control on October 13sent a written request to coastal localities from northern Quang Ninh tocentral Phu Yen provinces, ministries and press agencies, urging promptpreparations for Khanun, which is likely to worsen the current devastatingfloods once it hit the mainland.-VNA
