Spokesman stresses Vietnam’s efforts to promote women’s rights

Hanoi (VNA) – Foreign Ministry spokesman Le HaiBinh underlined Vietnam’s consistent policy of promoting women’s rights whilefielding a question regarding the US State Department’s honouring of aVietnamese blogger.
At the ministry’s regular press conference onMarch 30, reporters asked about Vietnam’s response to the US State Department’sselection of Nguyen Ngoc Nhu Quynh (blog nickname Me Nam) for the InternationalWomen of Courage Award.
“Vietnam’s consistent policy is alwaysprotecting and promoting people’s fundamental rights, including women’srights,” Binh said, adding that the country’s efforts and achievements inensuring and improving human rights have been recognised and highly valued bythe international community.
The US State Department’s presentation of anaward to a person who is currently held in custody to serve investigation intolaw violations is an action that is neither objective nor suitable and does notbenefit the development of the two countries’ relations, he stressed.-VNA
A symposium was held in Hanoi to review 50 years of the Int'l Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Int'l Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and their implementation in Vietnam.
Vietnam has contributed to a wide range of international and regional initiatives on human rights and other issues, including efforts to respond to global challenges, according to Deputy Foreign Minister Ha Kim Ngoc.
The US’s 2016 annual Human Rights report acknowledges some of Vietnam’s achievements in protecting human rights, but makes biased statements and does not reflect the real situation in Vietnam, said Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson.
“Economic empowerment for women is a strong commitment and one of the priorities of the Vietnamese Government,” Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung said on March 13.

During the negotiations, the US highly evaluated Vietnam’s goodwill and efforts, affirmed its appreciation for the bilateral relationship, acknowledged Vietnam’s proposals and concerns, and considered these an important basis for continuing discussions and moving towards a final agreement.
