Singaporean PM nominates new parliament speaker

Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on September 5 announced the nomination of Social and Family Development Minister Tan Chuan-Jin as the new speaker of the parliament to replace former speaker Halimah Yacob.

Singapore (VNA) - Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on September 5 announcedthe nomination of Social and Family Development Minister Tan Chuan-Jin as thenew speaker of the parliament to replace former speaker Halimah Yacob.

According to astatement issued by the Prime Minister's Office, PM Lee’s decision received thesupport of all parliamentarians from the People's Action Party (PAP) that holdsthe majority of seats in the parliament.

Tan is poised tobecome Singapore's 10th parliament speaker on September 11 when the houseconvenes.

Earlier on August 7,former speaker Halimah Yacob resigned to take part in the upcoming presidentialelection.-VNA
