Secondary surveillance radar station to be built in Ca Mau

The Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation (VATM) has announced that it will begin construction on the secondary surveillance radar station, the second of its kind, in the southernmost province of Ca Mau on August 9.

Hanoi (VNA) – The Vietnam Air Traffic ManagementCorporation (VATM) has announced that it will begin construction on thesecondary surveillance radar station, the second of its kind, in thesouthernmost province of Ca Mau on August 9.

Costing over 117 billion VND, the works include a 24.5m radartower, an operating house, secondary radar equipment and auxiliary facilitieson a site of 1,680 sq.m. The station will be equipped with new-generationsecondary radar equipment Mode S with advanced features in order to improve surveillancequality.

Radar Mode S has been chosen by the International CivilAviation Organisation (ICAO) in the process of realising the surveillance strategyfor Asia-Pacific since 2013.

The station will cover skies at the height of 500 – 10,000mwithin a radius of 250 nautical miles, ensuring timely update about flightoperations and important data about sky management for air defence.

It is assigned to work round the clock in the south of theHo Chi Minh Flight Information Region (FIR) which is contiguous to FIRs ofSingapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, and especially monitor flights in the south ofthe East Sea.

A VATM representative said the construction of the station isto realise a project on improving capacity, safety and quality of flightservices approved by the Transport Minister to meet ICAO standards.-VNA
