Sapling from world's longest-living Bodhi tree planted in Bai Dinh pagoda
A sapling marcotted from a 2,300-year-old Bodhi tree (also known as sacred fig with the scientific name of Ficus religiosa), the oldest of its species in the world, has been planted at the Bai Dinh pagoda in the northern province of Ninh Binh.

Ninh Binh (VNA) – A sapling marcotted from a2,300-year-old Bodhi tree (also known as sacred fig with the scientific name of Ficus religiosa), the oldest of its species in theworld, has been planted at the Bai Dinh pagoda in the northern province ofNinh Binh.
The tree, named Sri Maha Bodhiya, stands in Anuradhapura,Sri Lanka. It was said to be propagated from the famous Bodhi tree under whichSiddhartha Gautama the Lord Buddha was sitting when he gained enlightenment.
With permissions from the Sri Lankan Government and thelocal pagoda housing the sacred fig and support from the South Asian country’sembassy in Vietnam, the sapling was planted in Bai Dinh at a ceremony on March25.

The ceremony followed a pilgrimage starting March 21 bymonks and Buddhist followers from the Vietnamese pagoda to Sri Lanka to bring the sapling back to Vietnam.
The Bai Dinh pagoda is part of the local Trang An Landscape Complex that wasrecognised as a World Cultural And Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is atemple with massive, monumental architecture and bold traditional culturalidentity, considered a famous spiritual tourist destination in the northern region./.
Huong, Tam Chuc and Bai Dinh pagodas are home to beautiful scenery and relics showing the development of Buddhism in Vietnam. They have formed a tourist route attracting pilgrims and visitors.
Bai Dinh at night is engulfed in silence and peace. When the sun sets, the whole space here is lit up brightly, making the Buddhist complex holding many Vietnamese records appear with majestic, sparkling and magical beauty.
