Lam Dong (VNA) – The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the World Bank (WB) held a workshop on expanding the programme on sanitation and clean rural water in the Central Highlands and the south central region.
The workshop aims to expand the programme to seven provinces – Kon Tum, Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Dak Nong, Lam Dong, Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan.
This is the third area to benefit from the programme after the northwestern and northeastern regions.
The WB committed to give Vietnam 200 million USD to build facilities and raise awareness of accessibility to clean water and sanitary toilets.
Pham S, Vice Chairman of the Lam Dong Provincial People’s Committee, said the province is accelerating programmes of supplying clean water and building sanitary toilets.
Currently, the coverage rate of sanitary toilets in the Central Highlands, and Ninh Thuan and Binh Thuan provinces ranges from 43 to 85 percent. Gia Lai has the lowest rate.

The World Bank (WB) has said it recently approved an extra fund of 119 million USD for the ongoing Urban Water Supply and Wastewater Project in Vietnam.
Rural communities’ awareness of the importance of clean water, hygienic latrines and protecting the environment has been improved by the National Target Programme for Rural Clean Water and Sanitation.
All rural residents across the nation will get at least 60 litres of clean water each per day by 2020 under the National Target Programme for Rural Water and Sanitation.
The Central Highlands province of Lam Dong is set to reduce its poverty rate to less than 1.9 percent, in particular the rate of poor households in ethnic minority areas to under 4.8 percent by 2020.
The programmes have brought about positive changes to rural infrastructure, comprehensively improved the material and spiritual lives of farmers, and contributed to Vietnam's economic restructuring, said PM Pham Minh Chinh.
