Quang Ngai’s first mountainous commune named new-style rural area

Quang Ngai (VNA) – Nghia Son commune in Tu Nghia district, with 98 percent ofits population being H’re ethnic minority people, has became the firstmountainous commune of the central province of Quang Ngai recognised as anew-style rural area.
The commune began implementing the nationaltarget programme on building new-style rural areas in 2011 when itsatisfied only one of the 19 criteria.
Chairman of the communal People’s Committee PhamVan Son said the local authorities have worked hard to raise public awarenessof the State’s policies on building new-style rural areas as well asmethods and plans for the scheme.
To promote economic development and improve incomefor locals, many vocational training courses were arranged for rural labourers,and others were guided to apply advanced science and technology in production,Son said.
The commune’s average rice productivity increasedfrom 45 quintal per ha in 2011 to 59 quintal per ha in 2016. Now, 88 percent ofthe households in Nghia Son are living on cattle and poultry breeding. Locals’average annual per capita income increased to 27.3 million VND in 2016 from 6.5million VND in 2011. The rate of poor households in the locality saw a sharpdecrease, now standing at only 3 percent.
In the coming time, the local authorities will continuemaking efforts to further improve locals’ living standards, Son said.

The northern province of Vinh Phuc aims to build concrete roads in all of its rural areas by 2020 as part of its new-style rural area building programme from 2017 -2020.
The northern mountainous province of Dien Bien aims to have 35 communes complete from 15-19 criteria of the programme on building new rural areas by 2020.
The northern mountainous province of Tuyen Quang has six more communes recognised as meeting new-style rural area standards this year, raising the province’s total to 16 communes.
Total debt for basic construction in the new-style rural area building programme was reduced to about 9.55 trillion VND (434 million USD) at the end of 2016 from over 15.27 trillion VND (694 million USD) early last year
