Da Nang (VNA) – The women’s union ofDa Nang and UN Women jointly launched a Asia-Pacific regional project onenhancing measures to end violence against women and girls in the central cityon August 25.

The Vietnam component of the project, which aimsto mobilise the community’s engagement in preventing violence against women andgirls, will be implemented from 2017 to 2020 with financial support from theAustralian Government.

The project is to create changes directlybenefiting women and girls, enhance knowledge to end violence, and shareevidence and practice across the Asia-Pacific region.

It also targets changing prejudices and increasing accountability of regionaland national organisations to implement policies to end violence against womenand girls.

According to Vice Chairman of the Da NangPeople’s Committee Ho Ky Minh, in Vietnam, six out of ten women are victims ofdomestic violence. She cited the UN’s estimates as saying that domesticviolence in Vietnam caused economic losses equivalent to 3.2 percent of thecountry’s GDP.

The municipal authorities and people willactively engage in fighting violence against women and girls, thus building DaNang into a safe and friendly city, he stressed.-VNA
