Dong Thap (VNA) – The flood-prone Dong Thap Muoi(Plain of Reeds) in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap will benefit from aproject on enhancing flood drainage capacity and developing sustainable sourcesof livelihood for local residents.

The People’s Committee of the Mekong Deltaprovince has approved the budget of over 664 billion VND (23.4 million USD) forthis project, which includes more than 570 billion VND (25.2 million USD) inODA loans. The rest will be covered by the province’s budget and privatesources.

The scheme will be implemented from 2017 to 2020,targeting 22,313ha of land in the districts of Hong Ngu, Tam Nong and ThanhBinh and Hong Ngu township. It is set to benefit 11,400 local households.

Vice Chairman of the provincial People’sCommittee Nguyen Thanh Hung said under the plan, three livelihood models basedon combination of rice cultivation and fish or shrimp raising will be introducedto local farmers.

While dykes and culverts will be upgraded orbuilt, communication activities will be stepped up to encourage farmers tochange their agricultural practices. It will also establish cooperatives andgive farmers training in farming and product preservation techniques.

The project in Dong Thap Muoi is a component of theMekong Delta Integrated Climate Resilience and Sustainable Livelihoods projectfunded by the World Bank, which aims to enhance tools for climate-smartplanning and improve climate resilience of land and water management practicesin selected provinces in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta.-VNA
