Nearly 200 traffic police and traffic inspectors from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport as well as members of the city's police task force 113 on October 20 began to patrol areas around the city's Tan Son Nhat Airport in an aim to control traffic congestion. A representative of the city's traffic police force, which is coordinating the campaign with the Tan Son Nhat Airport Authority, said that regular traffic jams occurred at 19 points around the airport. According to the Southern Airport Authority, the airport has served over 20 million passengers this year, and the figure is expected to rise to a total of 25 million for the entire year.
The airport receives more than 2,000 vehicles per day, causing traffic congestion in areas around the airport from morning until evening. To cope with the situation, traffic police will be present at the 19 most congested points from 6am to 10pm every day. "When an incident occurs, traffic police will work with other forces to ease the congestion as quickly as possible," said a member of the traffic police.
Taxis and buses which park at no-parking positions will be fined or penalised. The city's police force has also proposed building flyovers to ease congestion in these areas. They also plan to ask traffic management agencies to adjust traffic signs and re-zone bus-stop stations with the aim of minimising the number of traffic jams.-VNA
