PM urges diversifying resources for maritime medicine

HaiPhong (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc requesteddiversifying all possible resources to develop the Vietnam National Instituteof Maritime Medicine (VINIMAM) – the first of its kind in Vietnam and theSoutheast Asia, during a working session with its staff in the northern portcity of Hai Phong on November 25.
Theinstitute is tasked with conducting scientific research, joining disasterresponse at sea, offering training in maritime medicine, and providing firstaid and health care to workers and people at sea.
Itcurrently provides health check-ups and treatment to 100,000 people at sea eachyear.
ThePM expressed his hope that the VINIMAM staff would further improve theirprofessional and governance skills to deserve reputation as the country’sleading maritime medicine centre.
Healso suggested adopting technological advances and pitching for investment frominternational organisations.
TheHealth Ministry, Vietnam Social Insurance and VINIMAM were asked to launch themodel of medicine cabinets on vessels to better serve fishermen.
Inthe afternoon the same day, the Government leader issued an order to begin theconstruction of a five-star hotel and apartment complex worth 200 million USDin Hai Phong.

Healthcare centres for emergency aid and treatment of common diseases will be built this year in coastal provinces to ensure the success of the Vietnam Sea and Island Health Development plan to 2020, which was launched last year.
The Vietnam Association of Maritime Medicine (VAMM) has exerted efforts to realise the government’s strategy on developing health care system at sea and islands, said a leader of the association.
Government project 371, which aimed to develop healthcare systems at sea and on islands, proved effective in helping coastal residents and islanders access basic healthcare services, as heard at a conference in the central province of Phu Yen on April 16.
