PM Nguyen Tan Dung meets with UN Secretary-General

Vietnam will continue acting as a responsible member of the United Nations’ organisations and actively contributing to the building of the UN’s strategies and action programmes, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung told UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the sidelines of the 25 th ASEAN Summit in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, on November 12.

TheVietnamese leader elaborated that his country will actively engage inbuilding the UN’s post-2015 sustainable development goals andintegrating them into its national socio-economic targets.

Itwill also involve itself more in negotiations within the UN’s FrameworkConvention on Climate Change to help speed up the conclusion of a newglobal legally binding agreement in 2015, he added.

The PM statedthat Vietnam hopes for further policy consultation and practicalassistance from the UN in all fields, especially in sustainable povertyreduction, HIV/AIDS prevention and control, and climate changeadaptation.

The country expects the UN will support its bid tobecome a member of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in the2016-2018 tenure and a non-permanent member of the UN Security Councilin 2020-2021.

For his part, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moonspoke highly of Vietnam ’s attainments in fulfilling the MillenniumDevelopment Goals, which he said made the country one of the economieswith the fastest economic growth in the region.

He thankedVietnam for supporting the “One UN” initiative and valued itsparticipation in the UN’s peace-keeping forces. He congratulated thecountry on its election as a member of the UN Human Rights Council andacknowledged its contributions to the building of the UN’s post-2015sustainable development goals.

The Secretary-General also lookedforward to a visit to Vietnam in the near future to furthercooperation between the UN and the country.

Regarding the EastSea situation, Ban Ki-moon affirmed the UN’s viewpoint that allsovereign disputes in the waters need to be settled through dialogues,and all concerned parties must avoid actions that may cause tensions.

Hesaid he hopes regional meetings will offer opportunities for partiesinvolved to solve the issue, and the UN is willing to provide assistanceto these efforts.-VNA
