PM launches programme to provide computers for disadvantaged students

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on September 12 launched a programme to provide computers and telecommunications services for students and pupils with difficult circumstances, especially those living in areas hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on September 12 launched aprogramme to provide computers and telecommunications services for students andpupils with difficult circumstances, especially those living in areas hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The launching ceremony was held virtually and connected to 63 provinces andcities nationwide.

Theprogram aims to mobilise 1 million computers, and ensure mobile service coverage at all283 points without mobile Internet connection in localities that are applying socialdistancing regulations, and 1,910 other places nationwide.

According to statistics from the Ministry of Education andTraining, as of September 12, online teaching and learning has been deployed in 26out of 63 provinces and cities across the country. The total number of students joining onlinestudying is estimated at 7.35 million, of them 1.5 million do not havecomputers.

PM Chinh said the Government is very interested in the safeopening of schools.

However, in the context of complicated developments of thepandemic, many students do not have computers for their online study, and in manyplaces, the internet network is unstable or there is no connection, he said.

According to the PM, online learning and teaching is a neweducation method, which require educators, psychologists and teachers tosuitably adjust teaching methods and contents.

He requested the Ministry of Health to coordinate with the Ministryof Education and Training, relevant sectors and localities to accelerate COVID-19vaccination for children.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Information and Communications was asked to workwith the Ministry of Education and Training, relevant ministries and sectors,and localities to ensure internet connection for online teaching and learning.

At the ceremony, over 1 million computers worth 2.5 trillion VND(over 109.6 million USD), and 3 trillion VND (over 131.5 million USD) to provide mobile services, were presented to theprogamme./.
