PM calls for joint action to deal with plastic waste pollution

Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc haswritten a letter urging joint action for a healthy, safe and sustainable livingenvironment as well as dealing with pollution caused by plastic wastes.

In the letter, he said plastic waste is enough to cover fourtimes the surface of the earth each year. As many as 13 million tonnes ofplastic waste discharged into oceans are harming ecological system, humanhealth and sustainability of each nation.

Many countries have taken specific actions to reduce and banthe use of eco-unfriendly plastic products while increasing the recycle ofplastic wastes.

At international forums, Vietnam proposed initiatives,joined global and regional cooperation mechanisms for the effort.

As plastic waste is increasing in Vietnam, the government istaking drastic measures to effectively control them, especially disposable plasticproducts and imperishable nylon bags, towards a circular and green growtheconomy, he said.

According to him, dealing with plastic waste pollution is anurgent task requiring regular involvement of departments, agencies and theentire society.

He suggested changing plastic use habits; reducing,classifying, collecting, reusing and recycling plastic waste; using moreeco-friendly products and promptly honouring good examples and models.

Each official and Party member should set good examples inthe effort while ministries, agencies and localities should continue refiningmechanisms and laws to synchronously and effectively address the issue, hesaid.-VNA
