The Mekong Delta region needs over 170 trillion VND (8.1 billion USD) tocomplete its water resource system in line with the proposed plan by2050.

The plan aims to create a irrigational system foragriculture production in response to climate change and rising sealevel, as well as to contribute to socio-economic development, ecological protection, and sustainable development in the region.

Thecapital, to be sourced from central and local budgets, governmentbonds, and official development assistance (ODA) loans, will beallocated for the construction of dykes, drains, and reservoirs.

Toachieve these targets, investments have been made to build irrigationalworks and upgrade dykes and coastal roads. The plan also highlightedthe need to develop rural transport infrastructure to facilitate theconstruction of “new-style rural areas” in areas prone to flooding.Additionally, specific solutions have been tailored to match thespecific needs of each province in the region.

Localities andrelevant agencies have been urged to plant coastal mangroves, protectnational parks, and take flood precautions to assist residents infrequently affected areas.

To date, the water resource system inthe Mekong Delta has made great contributions to improving alum rates indrinking water in Tu Giac Long Xuyen region, Dong Thap Muoi region, andthe Ca Mau peninsula as well as managing erosion and sediment innational parks.

However, coastal areas still lack water supplyproduction and investment for the building and management of theirrigational system required to capitalise on socio-economic developmentpotential for the southern economic region.-VNA
