No Vietnamese killed, injured in Indonesia earthquake

There is so far no report on any Vietnamese citizens affected by the 6.5 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia’s western province of Aceh in Sumatra island on December 7, according to the Vietnamese Embassy in Jakarta.

Jakarta (VNA) – There is so far noreport on any Vietnamese citizens affected by the 6.5 magnitude earthquake inIndonesia’s western province of Aceh in Sumatra island on December 7, accordingto the Vietnamese Embassy in Jakarta. 

The embassy said there is very few Vietnameseliving in the area, and it is coordinating with Indonesian agencies to keep updatedon latest information. 

As of December 7 afternoon, quake fatalitiesclimbed to almost 100 and more than 600 others were injured. 

Search and rescue operation is underway, involving large numbers of military,police and disaster management forces as well as volunteers.

Indonesia often experiencesearthquakes and volcanoes because it lies in the so-called Pacific Ring ofFire.

Aceh province was also hit by a 9.2 magnitudequake followed by a tsunami in 2004, which killed 120,000 people and severelydevastated the locality.-VNA
