NGOs honoured for contributions to Vietnam’s poverty reduction

Forty-eight foreign non-governmental organisations (NGOs) were honoured for their contributions to poverty reduction and sustainable development in Vietnam during 2013-2017 on December 21.

– Forty-eight foreign non-governmental organisations (NGOs)were honoured for their contributions to poverty reduction and sustainabledevelopment in Vietnam during 2013-2017 at a ceremony in Hanoi on December 21.

Speaking at theevent, Vice President of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO) DonTuan Phong said the national programme calling for foreign non-governmentalassistance in 2013-2017 was a success with all targets achieved.

The success was achievedthrough great contributions from NGOs, together with the efforts of Vietnam’sministries, agencies and localities, he affirmed.

Country Directorof Save the Children in Vietnam Dragana Strinic expressed her honour to receivethe certificate of merit which acknowledges the NGO’s important contributionsto poverty reduction and social welfare in Vietnam.

Strinic statedthat Vietnam still faces many challenges, including an increase in the wealthgap and development gap between urban and rural areas. The country is also greatlyaffected by climate change, she added.

NGOs, includingSave the Children, are committed to maintaining cooperation with the VietnameseGovernment and partners to tackle these challenges, eliminate poverty andachieve sustainable development goals, she confirmed.

According toreports from ministries, sectors, localities and mass organisations, theprogramme was implemented effectively, basically achieving the set targets.

Many legaldocuments related to foreign non-governmental work were issued, while othershave been revised, towards facilitating NGOs’ activities in the country.

Cooperationbetween State agencies and NGOs has been also strengthened.-VNA
