Naval soldiers who died on southern continental shelf commemorated

Kien Giang (VNA) – A ceremony was held atPlatform DK1/9 of Naval Region 2 on January 10 to pay tribute to soldiers wholaid down their lives on Vietnam’s southern continental shelf.
Colonel Vu Duy Luu, deputy head of the PoliticalDepartment of Naval Region 2, recalled the establishment of theeconomic-scientific-service platform cluster DK1 on the southern continental shelf, whichwas set to serve the task of safeguarding national sea and islands.
Over the past three decades, generations of navalsolders of Battalion DK1, who come from different localities across thecountry, have braved great hardship and worked on those platforms on the continental shelf, he said.
During strong storms in 1990, 1996, 1998 and2000, several platforms were destroyed, causing the death of a number of naval officers and soldiers working on the platforms.
Their sacrifice has become a noble symbol of naval soldiers’ heroic virtue inthe new period, Colonel Luu stressed.
The participants held a one-minute silence, burnedincense and released flowers in memory of the fallen soldiers./.
Brigade 171 from the High Command of Naval Zone 2 will visit and deliver New Year (Tet) gifts to officers and soldiers on the DK1 platforms, on-duty ships and officials on Con Dao island district.
The Command of Naval Region 2 on January 8 sent two delegations to visit and offer Lunar New Year (Tet) greetings to officers and soldiers performing duties at the DK1 platforms in Vietnam’s southern continental shelf, along with the island district of Con Dao.
The programmes have brought about positive changes to rural infrastructure, comprehensively improved the material and spiritual lives of farmers, and contributed to Vietnam's economic restructuring, said PM Pham Minh Chinh.
