National programme approved to protect tigers

The Prime Minister has passed a national programme on tiger protection for the 2014-2022 period, according to the Vietnam Government Portal.

Theprogramme aims to protect and preserve tigers, their habitats andpreys; gradually prevent the declining number of the cats in the wild by2020 and fulfill the country’s commitments to the Global Tiger RecoveryProgramme (GTRP).

Tiger habitats subjected to protection includenational parks namely Vu Quang (Ha Tinh province), Pu Mat (Nghe Anprovince), Yok Don (Dak Lak province), Chu Mom Ray (Kon Tum province),and two nature reserves of Sop Cop (Son La province) and Song Thanh(Quang Nam province).

The task will be integrated with relatedprogrammes and strategies such as the Forest Development Strategy by2020 with a vision towards 2030 and the National BiodiversityConservation Strategy by 2020 with a vision towards 2030.

Theprogramme strengthens management and supervision of tiger population,investigates tiger farms and set up a national database to manage andidentify captive tigers.

Earlier, the WWF ranked Vietnam as theworst country for wildlife crime in its first such survey of how well 23countries in Asia and Africa protect rhinos, tigers and elephants.-VNA

Vietnam pioneers use of ꦆAI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
