Hanoi (VNA) –The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) on May 8 announced that 93 refugees from Myanmar livingin camps in Thailand have gone home in the second return since 2016.
According to theagency, the refugees left on May 7 from five camps then split into two groupsand crossed into Myanmar's Karen and Kayah states.
They were receivedby Myanmar authorities and assisted at two reception centres, the UNHCR said,adding that the refugees in Thailand expressed their interest in returning homeand began making plans for their future.
About 100,000refugees from Myanmar, most of them being Karen ethnic minority people, havebeen living in nine camps in Thailand along the Myanmar border since theMyanmar army began sustained offensives against Karen guerillas in the early1980s.
The first voluntaryrepatriation of 68 Myanmar refugees from the camps took place in 2016.-VNA
