Myanmar holds urgent meeting on national security

The Myanmar government has held an urgent meeting in Nay Pyi Taw to discuss issues related to national security and international relations.

Hanoi (VNA) – The Myanmar government has held anurgent meeting in Nay Pyi Taw to discuss issues related to national security andinternational relations.

The Myanmar Presidential Palace said on June 8 that government officials andarmy generals focused on debating domestic issues after the country signed a memorandumof understanding (MoU) with the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency.

The deal enables the UN bodies to access and engage in addressing the crisis inRakhine state as well as support the repatriation of Rohingya refugees,establishment of an investigation commission in Rakhine, and other issuesrelated to the state and national security.

Attending the meeting were 15 high-ranking leaders of Myanmar, including StateCounsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing. The meetingtook place one day after Myanmar signed the MoU with the UN agencies.

Some 700,000 people have fled over the border to Bangladesh after the militarylaunched a violent crackdown on Rohingya insurgents last August.

Myanmar and Bangladesh signed an agreement on repatriating Rohingya people inNovember 2017. But only some refugees have been cleared for return, as theyfear security instability.  

Both countries have traded accusations over who is responsible for the delay.-VNA
