Myanmar declares new curfew in northern Rakhine state

Myanmar on August 12 declared a new curfew in the northern state of Rakhine, where is home to one million Rohingya Muslims, as the government has beefed up its military presence at the state, reported the country’s state media.

Hanoi (VNA) –Myanmar on August 12 declared a new curfew in the northern state of Rakhine,where is home to one million Rohingya Muslims, as the government has beefed upits military presence at the state, reported the country’s state media. 

The state media also said the new curfew will bein force in “necessary places” as the military mounted its clearanceoperations.  

A Rohingya villager said his community feared arepeat of last year’s violent crackdown. 

On August 10, the government deployed 500 troopsto several towns, including Buthidaung and Maungdaw near the border withBangladesh. 

The government’s decision to increase themilitary presence in the region and declare the curfew came a weekafter local residents claimed that they had found bodies of seven Buddhistfollowers near Maungdaw after they discovered a camp for Rohingyafighters.-VNA
