More efforts needed to tackle floods’ impact, cope with Storm Nangka

Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on October 12 issueda dispatch asking for every effort to tackle impact of floods and heavy rainsin the central region and deal with Storm Nangka, the seventh to hit the EastSea, and tropical depression.
The dispatch said that severe flooding triggered by torrentialrain has caused great losses in human and assets in the central region. ThePrime Minister sent his profound sympathy to families of the fatalities and themissing.
Natural disasters are forecast to develop complicatedly inthe following days, he stated, requiring the Central Steering Committee forDisaster Prevention and Control, the National Committee for Incident, DisasterResponse and Search and Rescue, related ministries and sectors, and localitiesto continue dealing with the impact of floods and rains, and keeping a closewatch on the seventh storm and tropical depression’s developments to have timelydirections.
The Prime Minister asked central localities from Quang Binhto Binh Dinh and the Central Highlands region to continue implementing hisprevious dispatch dated October 8 with focus on ensuring locals’ lives byevacuating them out of dangerous areas.
The localities were urged to intensify the search formissing people, visit and encourage affected households, especially thosereporting fatalities and missing members, and provide temporary accommodations,food, and necessities for them.
The Government leader asked the Health Ministry to ensuremedical check-ups and treatment for locals and guide them on diseaseprevention.
The Finance Ministry was requested to coordinate withauthorised offices to promptly meet urgent relief requirements related tonational reserves from localities, especially food, tents and lifebuoys, whilethe Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs was urged to report andpropose food assistance for those affected.
The PM also asked the Ministry of Natural Resources andEnvironment to keep a close watch on development of the seventh storm andtropical depression to provide timely and accurate predictions.
The Ministries of National Defence and Public Security arerequired to prepare to support local people in dealing with heavy rains andfloods and overcoming the consequences, while the Ministry of Transport wasasked to ensure the safety of vessels./.
The standing office of the central steering committee for natural disaster prevention and control has demanded ministries, sectors and localities continue to focus on dealing with serious flooding in the central region following the Prime Minister’s October 8 dispatch.
Rising flood level in Ben Hai, Hieu, Thach Han and O Lau rivers in the central province of Quang Tri killed one locals and affected 39,700 households as of October 11 morning, reported the provincial Steering Committee for National Disaster Prevention and Control.
The Vietnam Red Cross Society Central Committee said on October 10 that it had offered relief aid to households affected by torrential rains and floods that hit the central provinces of Quang Binh, Quang Tri and Quang Nam with goods worth over 476 million VND (20,583 USD)
